The Question for this Project:
What do our children need to thrive in the world they will inherit? A world we cannot imagine.
There are many parts to this question - but it makes sense to start by asking what we think will become key skills in the future. Some answers you may want to consider are:
- Global understanding
- Flexibility
- An understanding of complexity
- Technical know-how
- An ability to problem solve
This site is a growing repository of resources for those who want to answer this question in your own way for your own communities. You may also want to read on this site and on the web about what New Zealand is doing with core competencies.
As you consider this idea there are many ways we invite you to relate to the larger international population that come here:
- Ask the youth in your area to answer the question - we will post their ideas here.
- Host a group for three meetings: to consider, to discover new ideas, to plan new futures and we will publish those responses as well.
- Register as a member of this community and post or respond to forum discussions, start special interest groups, share resources.
- Spread the word through Twitter, Facebook, etc and suggest others visit our site.
- Take the survey, post your responses on the map - let your voice be heard!

What brings people to this site is a desire for something to change in education. As we travel we consistently hear that education isn't "quite right" in most parts of the world - in some places and for some young people it seems completely broken. The Future(s) of Education project was born in 2008 out of three ideas:
- It is time we started to do something about it.
- To do something we first have to answer the question: "What do our children need to thrive in the world they will inherit? A world we cannot imagine?"
- If people around the world put their heads together we can design more options and find a better way.
That way will not be the same for all communities - but we are hear to link communities and ideas, to help them percolate and eventually to help support pilot innovations.
You are the reason this site exists and if you are interested there are several things you can do:
- Read, muse and comment on the various offerings under "for discussion."
- Bring in some friends - hold three meetings and plan what you might want to do in your community - or just upload your ideas here - it is all good.
- Add content that you know about or links we should include to the site.
- Be part of the advisory council that pushes this project along.
